Minnature Banana Fiber Elephants

$28.50

What is banana fiber?

Bananas grow on plants rather than trees with the fruit technically being a berry. The leaf sheath around the base/ stem of this herbaceous flowering plants is were you find the hidden fiber resource not in the fruit at all. This fiber can be obtained from either non edible banana trees or the edible species like plantains. The raw material is made by soaking the banana leaves to separate the two layers and once the leaf is soft, the layers can be pulled apart. While one layer is waste, the other one is cut into thin strips and twisted to form strings. These strings are hand-woven into bags, baskets, mats, hats, ornamental boxes and picture frames or just about anything . The banana fiber craft workshop incidentally not just empowers local crafters , but also helps recycle natural resources.

This hand woven Elephant is made from wires wrapped around with the banana fiber. Just a perfect gift for elephant lovers.
